Bubble on the Surface

This blog post has been working within me for awhile now. All types of , hit me upside the head, get your head out of your A$$ moments. I guess I have been living in a bubble on the surface, protected from what is outside of me and not exploring any depth.

I guess the first sign that I was living in a bubble was when I began working in HR for a National retail chain. Speaking with several of our employees, I was made aware of struggles that just made me stop in my tracks. One such woman, she works 2 jobs and her husband works 3, they share a car and often she is taking the bus to work and has to plan her work schedule around the bus schedule. I really don’t want to sound like a snob or a brat but, we don’t live in an Urban area necessarily so I really never associated Mass transportation with our area, I really thought that was something that was mostly used in the Cities and was utilized mostly to reduce traffic. Yep, my bubble at work.

So, back to this woman. She works so hard, when we need more help, she comes in on her day off if able. Meanwhile, I also observe so many people who look for any excuse to not show up. There are so many people who overcome obstacles to show up and work and there are those who look for obstacles to keep them from working. I am so in awe of, and amazed by those people who show up and do their best.

This story, has been shared with some of my loved ones and I am not totally sure as to why it impacted me so and then, I started Health Coaching.

More Smack me upside the head!

”We are Facebook Friends”. HAHAHa!

I remember introducing myself to someone in person “Hi I am Stephanie Sullivan, we are Facebook Friends.“. I had never met this person in person before but we had friends in common so I figured why not. I knew where they took their vacations, how they liked their Starbucks, what sports teams their children played on and we were friends, right?

Since I have started Health Coaching, I spend time actually speaking with friends and Facebook friends, not just liking their photo of their dog or their cocktail poolside, actually talking. The thing with FB and the other social media is that we think we know people based on what they post, what I have realized through actual conversation is that I do not know them at all.

Friends new and old have taught me recently that our true stories are beneath the surface. It’s about infertility, its about the struggles of a single mom, its about an accident that changed a life forever, its about the illness that is wrecking our bodies but we continue to push forward. When we look beyond the Facebook and Instagram image, and we ask the questions and have the conversations that’s when we learn the person.

Both the bubble and surface, keep us from learning, growing, sharing compassion and gaining gratitude.

Let’s burst the bubble and dive in!
